What to Do If Your Child Loses an Elastic Band or Retainer
It happens to the best of us: a bag of elastic bands goes missing, a retainer gets left at school, or an appliance cracks during recess. For parents and kids alike, losing orthodontic accessories can feel stressful.
At Shine Ortho Studio, we know that life with braces or Invisalign® comes with unexpected moments. The good news? Losing an accessory is rarely a dental emergency, but it does require prompt attention to keep treatment on track.
Here is exactly what to do if your child loses an elastic band, retainer, or other appliance.
Scenario 1: Lost Elastic Bands (Rubber Bands)
Elastic bands are crucial for correcting bite issues like overbites or underbites. They connect the upper and lower braces to guide jaw alignment. Because they wear out and break easily, patients are often given spare bags at appointments.
What to Do:
Check Your Supply: Most patients have extra elastic bands stored in a small bag provided by our office. If your child still has spares, they can replace the lost ones immediately. Use the exact type and size prescribed by your orthodontist.
Do Not Improvise: Never use household items like dental floss, string, or rubber bands from a pen to replace elastics. These materials are not designed for orthodontic force and can damage teeth, roots, or braces.
Continue Wearing as Directed: If you have spares, keep wearing the elastics consistently. Missing wear time can allow the bite to shift back, slowing down progress.
Call Us if You Are Out of Spares: If your child has run out of elastics and cannot replace them, call Shine Ortho Studio. We may ask you to come in for a quick refill or adjust the treatment plan temporarily.
Scenario 2: Lost Retainer
Retainers are your insurance policy against teeth shifting back after treatment. Losing one is inconvenient but usually not an emergency unless it involves a newly placed retainer that the teeth are still adjusting to.
What to Do:
Look Around First: Check pockets, backpacks, lunchboxes, and car seats. Retainers often end up in the most unexpected places.
Assess Urgency:
Active Treatment Phase (Full-Time Wear): If your child is in the first few months post-treatment and needs to wear the retainer 24/7, contact us as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more likely teeth are to shift. We can often create a temporary solution or expedite a new impression if needed.
Nighttime-Only Phase: If your child only wears the retainer at night and has missed one or two nights, do not panic. Call our office during business hours to schedule a replacement. Teeth do not shift significantly overnight for most patients who are past the initial stabilization phase.
Do Not Force an Old Retainer: If you find the retainer later and it feels tight or doesn’t fit, do not force it in. Forcing a retainer can crack it or move teeth incorrectly. Call us before trying to insert it.
Scenario 3: Lost or Broken Appliance (Headgear, Aligners, etc.)
Invisalign® Aligners: If an aligner is lost, do not skip ahead to the next one in the tray unless instructed. Skipping aligners can cause discomfort and poor fit. Instead, wear the previous aligner until you speak with us.
Headgear or Functional Appliances: These are critical for growth guidance in younger patients. If lost, contact Shine Ortho Studio immediately so we can schedule a fitting for a replacement as soon as possible to maintain treatment timing.
General Tips for Prevention
Prevention is always easier than repair. Here are a few habits that help keep appliances safe:
Use a Hard Case: Always store retainers and aligners in their protective hard case when not in the mouth. Never wrap them in napkins or leave them on tables.
Label Everything: Write your child’s name on the inside of retainer cases and elastic band bags.
Designate a "Home": Keep extra elastics and spare retainers in a consistent, easy-to-find location at home, like a drawer in the bathroom or a hook by the front door.
Educate Your Child: Remind your child that these items are essential tools for their smile, not optional accessories.
