The Difference Between an Overbite, Underbite, and Crossbite

Understanding Bite Problems

When people think about orthodontics, they often focus on straight teeth. But just as important as alignment is how your teeth fit together. This is called your bite. Bite issues can affect how you chew, speak, and even how your jaw feels day to day. Three of the most common bite problems are overbites, underbites, and crossbites.

What Is an Overbite?

An overbite happens when the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth more than they should. A small amount of overlap is normal, but when the top teeth cover too much of the bottom teeth, it can cause problems.

Common signs of an overbite include:

  • Top teeth covering most or all of the bottom teeth

  • Increased wear on lower teeth

  • Jaw discomfort or tension

  • Difficulty biting into certain foods

Overbites can develop from genetics, thumb sucking, or jaw growth patterns. If left untreated, they can lead to uneven wear and strain on the jaw.

What Is an Underbite?

An underbite is when the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth when the mouth is closed. This creates a reversed bite pattern and can affect both function and appearance.

Common signs of an underbite include:

  • Lower teeth extending past the upper teeth

  • Difficulty chewing properly

  • Jaw strain or shifting

  • A more prominent lower jaw appearance

Underbites are often influenced by jaw growth and genetics. In some cases, early orthodontic treatment can help guide jaw development.

What Is a Crossbite?

A crossbite occurs when some of the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of outside when biting down. This can happen in the front teeth, the back teeth, or both.

Common signs of a crossbite include:

  • Teeth that do not line up properly when biting

  • Jaw shifting to one side when closing

  • Uneven wear on certain teeth

  • Narrow upper jaw or crowded teeth

Crossbites can affect how the jaw grows and may lead to asymmetry if not corrected early.

Why Bite Problems Matter

Bite issues are more than just cosmetic. When teeth do not fit together properly, it can lead to uneven pressure, increased wear, jaw discomfort, and difficulty keeping teeth clean. Over time, these problems can affect both oral health and overall comfort.

How Orthodontics Can Help

Orthodontic treatment is designed to correct both tooth alignment and bite issues. Braces, Invisalign®, and early orthodontic appliances can guide teeth and jaws into healthier positions. The goal is to create a balanced bite that supports proper function and long term stability.

For younger patients, early evaluation allows orthodontists to identify bite issues while the jaw is still growing. For teens and adults, treatment can improve both function and appearance.
