The Best Age for an Orthodontic Evaluation: Why 7 Is the Magic Number

If you have heard that your child should see an orthodontist by age 7, you might be wondering why. Most children do not get braces until they are 11 or 12. So, why the early visit?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This is not because every seven-year-old needs braces. It is because age 7 is a unique window of time when orthodontists can see what is coming next.

What Happens at Age 7?

By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. They typically have their first permanent molars and their front incisors.

This mix gives the orthodontist a clear picture of dental development. We can see how the jaw is growing, how the bite is forming, and how the remaining permanent teeth are developing under the gums.

What Are We Looking For?

An early evaluation is not about fixing problems immediately. It is about detecting issues early. Some concerns we look for include:

  • Crowding or spacing: Are there enough spaces for the incoming permanent teeth?

  • Bite issues: Does the child have an overbite, underbite, or crossbite?

  • Jaw growth: Is the jaw growing symmetrically? Are there signs of skeletal discrepancies?

  • Habits: Are thumb sucking or pacifier use affecting tooth alignment?

  • Premature loss of baby teeth: Did a baby tooth fall out too early, potentially blocking a permanent tooth?

Does This Mean My Child Needs Braces?

In many cases, the answer is no.

For many children, the best recommendation is simply monitoring. We may ask you to bring your child back in a year or two to check progress. This allows us to track growth and determine the ideal time for treatment if it becomes necessary.

For some children, early treatment (often called Phase 1 treatment) may be recommended. This might involve a simple appliance to guide jaw growth or create space for incoming teeth. Early intervention can sometimes simplify later treatment or prevent more complex issues down the road.

However, we never recommend treatment just for the sake of it. Our goal is to provide honest, personalized recommendations based on your child’s unique needs.

Why Early Detection Matters

Catching issues early can offer several benefits:

  • Guiding Growth: Jaw growth can be influenced more easily in younger children.

  • Reducing Risk: Correcting bite issues early can reduce the risk of tooth injury or abnormal wear.

  • Simplifying Future Treatment: Early guidance can make comprehensive treatment in the teen years shorter or less complex.

  • Boosting Confidence: Addressing noticeable alignment issues early can help children feel more confident as they enter their pre-teen years.

No Pressure, Just Information

An orthodontic evaluation is a low-pressure visit. There are no X-rays or impressions required unless we see a specific reason to take them. The visit is mostly a conversation and a visual examination.

We want parents to feel informed, not pressured. If your child does not need treatment now, we will tell you. If they do, we will explain why and what the options are.
