5 Myths About Braces That Just Aren’t True

3/25/2025

Getting braces is a big decision, and with so much information (and misinformation) out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or hesitant. At Shine Ortho Studio, we believe in giving our patients the facts—so let’s clear up some of the most common myths about braces that simply aren’t true.

Myth 1: Braces are only for kids and teens
This is one of the most widespread misconceptions about orthodontic treatment. While it’s true that many people get braces during childhood or adolescence, orthodontics is for all ages. In fact, more adults than ever are choosing to straighten their smiles—whether for cosmetic reasons or to improve their bite and oral health. With discreet options like Invisalign, it’s easier than ever for adults to fit orthodontic care into their lifestyle.

Myth 2: Braces are extremely painful
Braces may cause some temporary discomfort, especially after adjustments or when starting a new set of aligners, but they shouldn’t be painful. Any soreness typically fades within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods. Today’s orthodontic technology is far more comfortable than in years past, designed with smoother materials and gentler force.

Myth 3: You can’t play sports or instruments with braces
You absolutely can play sports and musical instruments with braces—you just may need a short adjustment period. For athletes, we recommend wearing a custom mouthguard to protect your braces and teeth during contact sports. Musicians might need a little time to get used to the feel of braces, especially when playing wind instruments, but most adjust quickly and continue performing just as well as before.

Myth 4: Braces are just for cosmetic improvement
A straighter smile definitely enhances appearance and boosts confidence, but orthodontic treatment goes beyond looks. Braces help correct issues like crowding, bite alignment, jaw positioning, and spacing. These improvements can reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even TMJ discomfort—making braces an important investment in long-term oral health.

Myth 5: You have to give up all your favorite foods
It’s true that some foods should be avoided with traditional braces (like sticky candies and hard snacks), but you can still enjoy plenty of delicious options. Most people find creative ways to modify their meals without feeling too restricted. And if you choose Invisalign, you can remove your aligners to eat, meaning no food is off-limits as long as you clean your teeth before putting them back in.

Let’s Bust These Myths for Good
Braces have come a long way, and so has our understanding of what orthodontic care really means. Whether you’re a teen, adult, or somewhere in between, orthodontics is about more than straight teeth—it’s about building a healthy, functional, confident smile that lasts a lifetime.
